puffy cushions arranged in a triangular panel pattern

hi everyone, 

I'm trying to modify a definitions which creates rectangular ETFE panels, into a definition that produces the same ETFE panels, only in a square grid which is divided into 4 triangles in every slot. I'm trying to accomplish that using triangle panels component in the lunchbox plugin. Below are some images showing the 2 definitions I am trying to merge into 1.

Does anyone think it's even possible...? 

every sort of help or suggestion will be helpful and appreciated.

Just to clarify- I'm aiming for the outlines of the triangular panels (the pipes) to cut through the cushions, so that every slot consists of 4 separate triangular puffy cushions 

Is it what you are after? Mine is a little different method from your.

Another option is using mesh with Kangaroo plugin.
