with an image should be easire.

You have to

generate points on a grid, many solutions (from mesh, grid, series ...)

use image sampler with the same domain as the grid of points, don't forget to put brighness output

use the output to ajust length of lines 

pipe the lines with rounded end

and it is finished

Yes Kim it is never easy when you don't know. It is also good to see some will to understand the tool (I don't speak for you). Here is my trial with beautiful heighmap from  Sharpfang at devianart.
