Do you have Orange coloured components in your Grasshopper definition?

If so then it needs to have some referenced geometry from Rhino to work with.

Thanks this was very helpful. Next question: I get a polyline shape in Rhino. Can I convert the polylines into solid cylinders that follow the line?

sure,
firstly, select original component in gh (your object in rhino should turn green), then use "bake" button to convert gh object into rhino editable one, enjoy!
