Ordering points in a grid for consistent pattern

Hi,

Im working on a pattern as seen on the first screenshot. Problem is, it only works on the one particular surface I wrote the script with. If I apply the script to another surface, the pattern is all jumbled up. I assume I need to somehow order the points first in order to get consistent indexing, but not sure what the best way to do this would be. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

forgot to upload the script. Also, any pointers on how to make the script more efficient would also be very welcome!
