objective: cut the scroll pattern out of the ring?

A bit better but not yet good (tolerance in rhino set to 0.001)

Thanks Laurent: I think the rest of the missing scroll parts has to due with rhino's "Planer Curves" command. I was unable to convert all the .eps parts into a single planer surface. :(

regardless, if I understand your solution correctly, you made the scroll a little thicker so it actually intersected with the ring, before applying the Boolean difference.
