Right click on the inputs and randomly select "Graft" or "Flatten" until you get the output you want... that's what I always do :)

Thank you Martyn, it never occurred to me to try random combinations. but i did that, and found a combination that worked. bugs me that I do not understand exactly why, so I will investigate tree structures further, but at least the design cab proceed. Thank you for the idea
