Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello all,

I have recently completed a kinetic sculpture and I want to try modelling it in grasshopper. I really have two questions:

1. How would I go about doing this in grasshopper? It is a mechanical system, so I want it to rationalize (I.e. adapt within its mechanical bounds) along a line.

2. I want to explore using hoopsnake to have the 'machine' adapt to new environments using recursive algorithims. Essentially I want to try to mimic the behavior of a vine that grow along a trestle (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/08/79/59/0879592262240677...). I would create some type of grid, and then my machine would "grow" along the trestle using a recursive algorithm.

I know that grasshopper has kangaroo physics, can that plug in accomplish this?

Any help is much appreciated, thanks!!

Although this is theoretically possible ... and since reinventing the wheel is not my forte ...  I would strongly recommend to use some MCAD app for that type of puzzles: a vast in build kinematic/animation capabilities, feature driven modelling etc etc. If you are not familiar with these find a friend of yours and ask a kinematic demo (best is the notorious Siemens/NX a click above CATIA).

Alternatively have a look on Modo 8 (stunning animation capabilities - but solely key-frame based).

BTW: since you are after art > THIS is art made with the astonishing NX (Ducati designs the bikes with German sourced stuff since VW owns Ducati).

very cool!! I see what you are saying about the capabilities of NX but I am really trying to stick with GH. How close do you think I can get with GH and Kangaroo?

...How close...

About 666.666,66 miles (give or take a few).

BTW: I have - an other - 1m (*) idea: we can collaborate and design a variety of kinetic things, make them via 3d printing (colored pink) and sell them to wealthy bikers: ultra cool swing arms, useless frames, portions of Ducati L90 engines, robo-cats, cyborg - dogs, WOW post-apocalypse Skynet thingies, whatever brings zillions to our pockets.

(*) m for micron.

hahaha very cool!! did you make all these things?

These are just the appetizer, he he.

Get bird's 3dPDF to play. BTW: That cyborg thingy [brainpower due to 66 highly trained sardines, basic armor the one that you can find in a humble AH64] is designed in order to protect Bentley Systems from Autodesk. Thus ... it's made with Microstation instead with NX or CATIA.

It does the job rather fine (up to date) by applying my way: first kill then talk.

I'm curious Peter, what type of computer horsepower is required to run that software?

Well...let's separate things:

Practice:

Trouble free Maintenance/Support etc is critical ... thus I use things the likes of H/P  Z840 with single or double (SLI) NVidia Quadros 5/6xxx. Estimate a cost around 8-10K per workstation. Linux is my favorite O/S and ... er ... hmm ... Windows (the older the better). I don't care about the so called "realism" in still renderings (why bother?) thus no // CUDA system around.

Home:

Various custom (i.e. "hand made") workstations (always with Xeon) mostly water cooled. SLI Quadros single or double and/or CrossFire AMD FirePro W8/9xxx on duty. Estimate a cost around 5-7K per workstation.

Note: before going the // route (SLI/CrossFire) MAKE SURE that your application can take advantage of dual stuff. Most of them around they can't. NX is rather the best on that matter.

BTW: In the old days Danny did a Theo Jansen related def.

I've added the "motion" (for fun) via Anemone ... but this (unfinished and ... er ... a "bit" pointless with regard the "additions") def is 1M miles away from what a top MCAD app could do (not to mention the spaghetti chaos > mama mia > no thanks > too dizzy for me).

Yea, I think GH is suitable for what I am doing. 'Kinematics' seems to be the key word, I found a bunch of cool stuff:

I am really interested in the swivel joints, ball joints, I will check out the jansen definition, hopefully I can mine it for the things I need.
