Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Now i know, that Grasshopper is good for rhinoceros ...

Is it also good for Microstation?

Grasshopper its a Plug in just for Rhinoceros, there's no way to vinculate with Microstation, the Parametric App of Bentley who is the Company who own Microstation its Named Generative Component

Yes, you should look at Generative Components.

I've been advancing on an IFC translator to AECOSIM so that Grasshopper to AECOSIM workflows are possible similar to what has been done with Revit.  I'm initially using ISM so it will be the structure domain.  I will be posting examples soon.

If you're transferring geometry, dwg or other formats should also work?

Hi Jon,

I'd be very interested in translation from GH to AECOsim,

Did you already give it a try ?

Is it something you could do with Python also ?

Hi Thomas,

I did develop some exchange using ISM (structural members and structural analysis data).  ISM appears nicely setout but seems many aspects I wanted to use aren't implemented or are work-in-progress.

So your best option is probably to use IFC.  This would mean IFC2x3 and using the native import capability as I haven't yet developed anything to enhance this in AECOSIM.

Cheers,

Jon

Microstation eh? My favorite app (+ AECOSim + various Bentley verticals + ProjectWise).

All in all:

GC: as part of the AEC Bentley arsenal (ESPECIALLY under the ProjectWise umbrella) GC contributes to that "all-in-one" thing. Some people believe that this is not a big deal (I guess that they have no real-life experience from AEC studies). GC is s   l   o   w, has more bugs than Sahara has grains of sand, and Robert Aish - the equivalent of David Rutten - had escaped to Autodesk (did the Dynamo since). GC is either stand-alone (+ Microstation) or a MS add-on. GC has a very steep learning curve. GC works on a "sequential" mode that is far better suited for engineering purposes. Microtation includes the best solid (NOT surface) engine known to mankind (same as Siemens/NX). Microstation also includes the best rendering engine (straight from the US movie industry: the notorious Nexus engine). Microstation has a lot of bugs.

GH: fast, vibrant community, fast becoming the standard for entry-level parametric adventures (not AEC), evolving 10 times faster than GC. But ... Rhino is NOT an AEC app nor it would ever be not to mention that surface modelling thingy, the non existent feature modelling capabilities and ... er... hmm ... MIA assembly/component capabilities as well.

For some MS+GC+... normal (and abnormal) adventures: https://www.behance.net/peterfotiadis

PS: post some real-life case (GH <> AECOSim) in MS native format (.dgn).
