I think the question is about making units that are duplicates. Like if you had a paneled surface where 90% of the panels had 2-3 duplicates it would be cheaper to manufacture, especially if a pattern or a jig was involved.
So given that a typical panel was roughly a given dimension, is there an optimization routine that brings panels within a given tolerance into a specific pattern. The differences would have to be made up somewhere... in unique pieces.
I'm guessing that is what he is after. I understand in theory, but don't have a script in mind.
