Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hey Andy-

I'm working on simulating a non-uniform LED mesh using your amazing Firefly tools and am so close! But i've run into a few snags and it's time to bring in the big guns (you).

First of all i tried loading a video into the video player and it immediately crashes rhino without hesitation. every time. so i scrapped that idea and exported my video as a series of jpgs to use the image sequence component. works great with a euclidian grid, but as soon as i try plugging in something non-uniform, all the pixels get scrambled. i've looked over the data trees and everything seems to be lining up so im not sure what the issue is. When i map a still image using GH's basic image viewer it maps fine. see images below.

Video still files of my face can be downloaded: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8jsrdtkexbep6ph/AACJHtAkxUoDSnbcHnn3FB_na

Any advice?

thanks!

Hey Dan,

Thanks for the question.  After looking through your file... I realized what the problem was.  Basically, the Firefly bitmap sampler works a little differently than the Grasshopper Bitmap Sampler.  Basically, it assumes that the image you're sampling is always going to be placed within a domain of 1 unit... so imagine the lower left hand corner of the image corresponds to a coordinate in space at {0.0, 0.0, 0.0} and the upper right hand corner of the image corresponds to a coordinate in space at {1.0, 1.0, 0.0}.  Now, if you don't intend to tile the image, then you would want all of your points to be scaled down so that they fit within that 1x1 square.  Once, the points are scaled down, then you can sample the bitmap as you would normally and then use the output to color your disks.  I've attached an example file below.  Hope this helps!

Incredible!

so how about the video issue? Can i replace the still frames with a video?...

The video should work just fine... you may just need to convert the file to .avi.  What format are you using?

-Andy

oh that may be why. i was trying .mov and .mp4

up and running with some lovely space video ripped from youtube! Thanks Andy!!

Hi Dan and Andy,

Have you try to use .avi file instead of still frames. I try to convert my .mov file to .avi but somehow my .avi file isn't work. Can you give me a hint about how to use the video file in firefly. Thanks!!!
