algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi all,

I am trying to project a set of curves (which have been joined to form one curve) onto a set of surfaces.  I have used the map to surface component, however, despite the curve mapping to a surface, it appears to be mapping to the original surface, and not the new surface that I cut from the original surface. Please see the 2 screenshots below.

I did try surface morph, however, that has given me even more complications.

First and foremost, am I using the most appropriate component?  Otherwise any suggestions or tricks of the trade would be very much appreciated.

I know that similar questions have been asked before, however, I seem to be having some trouble getting the component working the way I would like it.

Hi Brianna,

the problem in this case is that surface split doesn't shrink the surfaces. So if you bake them and then turn on the control-points, you'll see that your bottommost layer of twisted cylinders is still as big as before. The Map to Surface component ignores the trims and takes the entire UV space into account.

If I recreate your trimmed surfaces using Edge Surface, I get a correct mapping:

Since your shape is entirely rotational symmetrical, have you considered creating only a single panel/gap strip and then polar arraying it?

Hi David, I encounter a similar problem and find this post.

However, my surface has six edges so the method doesn't work anymore. 

Any ideas?

David, what visualization did you select/configure for the last capture? I like the way those green cylinders with thick edges look :P
