Laying geometry flat

What you call "laying flat" is actually called "unrolling" and there are loads of topics for this and laser cutting. Try the search function on your right hand side.

It looks like an easy way to do that would be to simply bake the geometry into Rhino and then use the Surface>Unroll Developable Srf command.
