Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi, i have a super huge 170mb grasshopper file, and i have hide all of the unneeded previews, but when i pan around, due to the huge file size, gh lags. is there a way for me to get gh work a lot faster in my computer? i have 16gb of rams, quadro 3700 graphics, and a quadcore extreme Q9300 processor, i think that surpass the requirement for gh to work, can i bump it up so that gh will run smoothly??
any advise would be much appreciated

Hi Guan,

you mean the viewports or the Grasshopper refresh rate?

Try hiding the Compass widget, that should speed up the Grasshopper display.

Hi david,

THANK YOU SO MUCH, i dont understand how big the difference was made. i dont understhand why the compass is slowing gh down so badly either.
have another question, does gh utilize up a specific amount of ram or processor your computer has or does it utilize as much power as your computer has? i dont think its using most of my computer's performance..is there a way to set it up ?

It's because the compass is very badly written. I didn't realize it at the time, only after some serious performance testing did I figure out the compass takes about as much time as everything else on the canvas combined.

Grasshopper is not a multi-threaded application. It will utilize the same core as Rhino so both programs have to share. Rhino (+all plugins) is allowed 2 or 3 GB of RAM under 32-bit OS. So unless you have a 64-bit version of Windows and are running a 64-bit version of Rhino5 you won't be able to use more than 2GB.

ahha, i have 64 bit windows, but running rhino 4 32 bit, hoping to get the 64bit rhino 5 soon, does gh works in rhino5 as well?? thanks for the info david!
Yes, Grasshopper should work in both 4 and 5, 32 and 64 bit. Hopefully we'll have it running on RhinoMac soon as well.
