Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi there!

I have a problem with a grasshopper file I am working on, could you please help?

I hope I can explain it well enough for you to understand.

I have created the basic parameters of a moveable structure with elliptical curves that intersect in two points.

Now I want to give those curves a dimension / a diameter. When I do that, of course those extrusions intersect and cross eachother as well.

How can I manage that the beams are not intersecting but just "touching eachother".

I would like to have that one beam is underneath/above the other one and not going through it.

Do you have an idea to help me out?

Thanks guys!

do you have the original gh file?

something like this is a starting point. see if you can work it out, I've tried to add notes but there will still be occasional intersections without further work.

I started out modeling two arches from each point, like your screen shot, with various ideas for resolving collisions...  but as can be seen using the three sets of sample curves included, there are many factors at play that create collisions - and ways of dealing with them, such as the heights of alternate ground points, for example.

A little more pleasing architecturally to use curves instead of circular arcs?

Might be interesting to look at connections at the crossing point on each side, for better tent-like support.

And, of course, better distribution of the points - instead of dividing both guide curves equally, the line between them is divided and 'Perp Frames' are used to find the base points for the arches along the curves - closer together when concave, further apart when convex.

Hey there!

I am very sorry for the late response. Thanks a lot for your input guys!

I still haven't figured out completely how it works, but I can attach the original file and maybe you can help me!

I still don't get how I can make it that the extrusions won't intersect. At the highest point they should be situated next to eachother (just touching eachother, not intersecting). And at the (middle/main) intersection point of the curves they should be positioned above eachother. In the one direction they should always be on top and the mirrored beams that go in the other direction should always lie underneath.

I hope I could explain it good enough for you to understand,

and that you can help me out!!

Thanks a lot in advance,

Best wishes

Maria

Would have been good to start with your GH file but sorry, not interested in a "conversation" where nearly a month goes by without a response.  Too much effort to get back into whatever the issues were on this particular project.  Good luck.

Yeah I'm sorry. I understand that, of course. It was just that I was not at home for a long time and I had private issues that had priority, sorry.

Thanks anyway!

This is a modification of your file with the beginning bits reorganised a little using grafting to keep track of things.

it basically drafts out where intersections would appear using surfaces and then offsets the beam centres from the intersection surfaces.

The membranes are then constructed using the beam edges with a catenary loft.
