Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi,

I searched the discussions for different keywords but I didn´t found anything.

Is there a possibility to reference a GH file in another definition?

That would be great - especially when you are working on complex scenes with different persons. Now we need to split parts of the definition and glue them together later.

I have two ideas in mind achieve this functionality. First you can create a referenced instance of one definition in a new definition where you can use the inputs and outputs without disconnecting or deleting existing nodes. This is the usual way when you are working with references in other software.

Second, probably much easyier to achieve, is a node which referes to an external GH definition and has a list where you can select the internal nodes to work with.

That would be great.....

I would be very thankful if anyone has another idea to achieve a comparable solution.

Thanks

Yep, I'd like too. Use a component to embed another GH definition with connectors should be great.

Hi teejot,

Clusters may be some way towards this goal. In 0.9+, clusters can be file references. However these should have cluster inputs/outputs already defined, so it's not exactly the same as you describe.

Referencing entire files as 'blocks', so you can hook into them but not modify them would also be possible, but I haven't written any code or made any mental designs in this direction yet.

Hi David,

we have clusters in mind, but we need more flexibilty and so we try to arrange our definitions to make a replacement much easier.

Maybe you think of this problem when you create new mental designs for GH...

Hi David, I'm trying to do the same. Merge different Grasshopper definitions into a single Grasshopper file, and to be able to update the linked definitions. Has there been any progress on this subject? Or maybe a plugin able to do this?

Fernando Maytorena

No progress will happen for Grasshopper 1, we're in feature lockdown mode meaning only serious bugs will get attention. Grasshopper2 is not anywhere near the stage yet where features like this start to become possible. I only just this week started designing the new (threaded) solution logic which is currently the bottleneck for further development.

No worries then, thanks anyway.
