Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

I'm having issues installing grasshopper into my Rhino 5 Educational 64 bit. It installed no problem in my 32 bit (except for the Kangaroo errors I get when I load Grasshopper), but I can't get Grasshopper to load at all in 64 bit.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional on a PC, downloaded the latest Grasshopper from Google Chrome. Any tips or advice?

I'm trying to figure out the same thing.

Which Rhino5 Service Release are you both running?

David,

I'm running Rhino 5 SR3 with GH 9.0056... I was also wondering if you might know why would I have two Rhinoceros 5 program shortcuts on my desktop?  One that just says "Rhinoceros 5" and the other says "Rhinoceros 5 (64-bit)"... T-Splines installed to the 64-Bit one and Grasshopper to the other (which I'm assuming is the 32-bit)... I'm running 64-Bit Windows 7 Bootcamped on my Macbook Pro Retina if that matters.

thanks for the help

Jason

Ok now I just noticed something weird... I don't usually use this laptop for Rhino and GH but started on a personal project this weekend.  Grasshopper has been acting unusually slow since I have been using this weekend... I noticed that the last saved file I have from Rhino was in July where I had been using GH.  I opened it and it opened in Rhino 64 bit. (I still don't understand why I have a 32 and 64 bit on my computer.  I don't think I installed it twice.  Do I need both?).. But, Grasshopper is not even a command in 64 bit when I open it now.  So I checked the SR release on it and it is SR6.  I vaguely remember updating the SR release when I opened Rhino a few days ago... But, again something seemed weird because I checked the SR release earlier when you asked me which one I had.  So I checked the 32 bit Rhino and it says SR3... How is this possible?  I thought that when I update the SR that it would update for both.

Why would Grasshopper disappear when I updated to SR6 (On the 64 bit)?  and would there be something affecting GH to make it run so slow?  I had a very simple script that needed to sit for 5 min to go through.  I was trying to get the area of 20 planar rectangles...

Lot of information here. You certainly don't need both 32 and 64 bit. The only reason for having both is if you're a plugin developer who wants to see how your plugin works with both versions, or if you require a specific plugins which only works on different versions. I'd get rid of 32-bit Rhino altogether if possible, it doesn't sound like it's updating correctly.

T-Splines I'm sure uses a custom installer instead of RHI. RHI ships with Rhino and if Grasshopper was installed with the one that was part of your 32-bit installation something may have gone wrong. RHI has had several serious bugs that should be fixed in Rhino5 SR6.

Here's some things to try:

  • Right click on an RHI file in Windows explorer and choose the Open With... option. Then click on Browse... and locate the rhiexec.exe program that is located in Program Files\Rhinoceros 5 (64-bit)\System\x64. This will associate RHI files with the newest version of rhiexec.exe on your machine. Install Grasshopper.rhi (the latest version 0.9.0061) to see if it appears in Rhino5 this time.
  • You can also manually install Grasshopper. Locate the GrasshopperPlugin.rhp file on your machine and drag+drop it into a running instance of Rhino5 64-bit. If Grasshopper has been installed into the (x86) portion of Program Files you can choose to put it somewhere else too, not sure if that would cause a problem.

I don't know why it would suddenly be very slow, but I'd like to know if it's still slow on 64-bits. Also, I'll need you to test the latest version because if there's a bug in older versions only then there's no point in fixing it.

David,

Sorry about all the info, I was just trying to get things straightened out and wasn't quite sure about everything...

I managed to get GH installed on Rhino 5 64-bit using the "Open With" procedure.  Works like a charm now.  It still seems weird to me that it all of a sudden disappeared from Rhino when I updated to SR6.

I uninstalled the 32-bit version of Rhino 5.  Thank you for letting me know that I didn't need it.  I don't know how it got there and am not sure if it was causing things to act strange, but it is gone now and things are running smoothly.

Lastly, I opened the GH file I thought was running slow this weekend on my desktop at work, and it seems it was running the same. So there was something wrong in the file and not the program or system... I figured out what was wrong in the file and managed to fix it.

Thank You again David for your help!!

Oh I wasn't complaining, usually the problem is people don't give me enough information :)

It's just that it seemed there were two possible problems involving two different service releases of Rhino with two different bit-depths. I was just softening you up for a prolonged support process, but it seems you've managed to fix it already.

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm in the midst of Midterms.

I'm running Rhino 5 SR6 and Grasshopper 0.9.61.0

David,

That did the trick! What an easy fix! I should have posted this two weeks ago. Thanks.

Kurt
