algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hi all,
I am trying to install Arduino, but unsuccessfully.... I am following all the steps (I think correctly...) shown in http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/Windows: When I look under Ports (COM & LPT) at device manager, I don't find the port named "Arduino UNO (COMxx)," consequently I cannot install Arduino's Driver.
Does someone have a suggestion? I appreciate it.
best,
Skender

Hi Skender,
When you plug in your Uno (I'm assuming your using an Uno and not an older model), and you look under the device manager... do you see anything? Even without installing the drivers on the windows side, the bootloader on the Uno should cause the computer to at least recognize the device (but you wont be able to 'talk' to it until you install the drivers). Have you tried plugging in the USB cable to different ports on your computer? Or restarting? What operating system are you working with?

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I think I managed to install the driver last night. The reason it was not working before was this: My computer (Windows 7 - 64 bits) was recognizing Arduino Uno, but was not installing the driver, because when I browsed for the ArduinoUno.inf driver, it did not list the individual files, but only the folders. Then, instead of browsing I wrote the address of the location of the Arduino Driver that was in the appropriate directory in the device manager window, and it worked by generating a new port called Com#5. I uploaded the FirmataUno file from the IDE and the uploading was successful, since the TX light at the board was turned on. According to what the tutorial says, I assume I am connected to Arduino now.
I have another question though, since I am a first time user.... I bought an Arduion Uno Starter Kit (from AMAZON) that has a USB Cable, a solderless board, the Arduino Uno Board and 65 Jumper wires. However, According to the tutorial there seem to be other devices, such as resistors, led sensors etc... What other things do I need to play with Arduino? Where can I buy them from? Can you advise?
thanks and best,
Skender
Hi Skender,
I'm glad you got your board working. It seems you've got the basic hardware, but there are many more components you can buy depending on what you'd like to do. Generally, I usually like to recommend the Sparkfun Inventors Kit (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10173) as an introductory level kit because it comes with a bunch of LED's, actuators, and sensors (along with the other stuff you mentioned). You could look through the list included in that kit and just buy those parts individually through Sparkfun (since you already have the board and some of the other components). Another option would be to buy a Sensor Pack from Adafruit.com (http://www.adafruit.com/products/176). It's relatively inexpensive and has a decent selection of starter sensors. This doesn't come with any actuators, so you may want to consider buying some LED's and maybe a servo motor or two. But, that should give you some of the basics elements to get up and running.
I should also mention that Sparkfun is throwing their annual Free Day tomorrow http://www.sparkfun.com/news/780. Basically, the're giving away $200,000 in $100 gift certificates. Basically, it's 1 per hour. Read up on that thread any hopefully you'll win $100 credit to buy some sweet stuff.
HTH,
Andy
Hi Andy,
Thanks a lot for your suggestions; I appreciate it.

Hi
I am trying to update the arduino uno drivers.
I did the following:
1) Installed the recommended main package from http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php/topic,118440.0.html]http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php/topic,118440.0.html
2) While navigating in file system, it is showing the driver arduino->drivers->arduino.inf
But when I try to update driver from device manager->Arduino Uno(COM7)->browse for driver software on your computer->enter location C:programfiles----arduino->drivers-> the arduino.inf is not listed???
In the arduino IDE (1.6.5) , when I go to tools->ports, I dont see any ports although I see it in device manager??
Please help
