The grid is a little confusing - my friend Marc Syp has been working on a "simple grid" that should make this less complex to get started with in the future. 

In the meantime though, the thing to understand is that you have to first set up your column and row definitions (what size they are, how many of them are there) and THEN assign a column / row index to each element you want to place in the grid. See below:
