Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi everyone,

I'm preparing a plan for computational design training.

Each one of us has a unique learning experience; understanding this diversity of personal preferences and priorities will be informative in the planning stage for this initiative.

I invite you to share your learning experiences by filling-out this 8-question anonymous survey:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/D9F2Q8H

Please fill it out by Monday, July 21st (2014!)

I was expecting that this would be better/more convenient than starting a long discussion group thread. But if the discussion thread is a better way, by all means let's start that discussion. Many thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Santi

So far 3 responses in the past 15 hours, not bad!

Here's the link to the responses:

The more responses the better (of course!)

Don't be shy and share your learning experiences.

Thanks to those who have filled-out the survey so far.

The responses are very concise, diverse and insightful.

For example, on question #4 (Please elaborate on what you learned and how important it was for you to learn that), some responses:

- Managing Data. If you can manage the data flow you can do anything computationally

- I learned to approach design related tasks as scientific problems.

- That computers solve well defined problems and are great at taking orders when the orders are clearly defined.

- The importance of properly designed data structures and flow. The need to be able to "sketch" in code to understand the problem at hand, and then redesign and clean it up.

I would suggest that people who are just getting into computational design will benefit from reading these responses. For this reason I'll keep the survey open and review it regularly for the next couple of months, as long as the responses keep coming.

Santi

You'll have to periodically post results here to keep the information 'near the top' then.

Survey update:

It's interesting to see the year when each respondent began their learning (question #1):

4 began before 2007 (1985, 1989, 1998, 2001)

12 began since 2007 (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013)

The most popular year was 2008 (5 responses)

Note: According to Wikipedia: "The first version of Grasshopper, called Explicit History at the time, was originally publicly released in September 2007." Interesting coincidence.

The response to question #2 by those that began before 2007 (How long did it take for you to feel comfortable with designing computationally?):

- Years

Don't remember, but it felt like a natural way to relate to cad.

After a few projects

A month.

Compared to some of the responses of those that began since 2007:

- A month

- A few months

- After 6 weeks

- About 8 weeks

Within my second design project with GH

five to six months

after 1 years of self learning + over 2 years of multiple projects and continuous self learning = Computation skill is comfortable but Computational Design can not be comfortable, Crazy learning curve.

There is much diversity, but some patterns begin to emerge.

Looking forward to more responses!
