This looks more like an even subdivision than an uneven one. Try creating the full grid of the pattern you are trying to make, and then try removing the ones that you don't want.

e.g. on even rows, starting on the fourth item, remove every other fourth item.

on odd rows, start on the second item and remove every fourth item. If there are special rows you can take care of them separately.
