the answer is pretty obvious. there is no point there.

thats why the polygon doesn't follow the expansion,it basically a rectangle. you have to change the way you generate the initial staggered quads

I understand that. I have used Lunch box to generate those quads and I even wrote an entire script from scratch generating the same form but honestly, I havent found any way to re-organize the data in a way to re-build the desired outcome.

well,

This is a workaround. I'm taking advantage of tyhe way that split surface operates. 

If it were me, I would rebuild the process of generating the staggered quads, to staggered polygons.
