Grasshopper workflow on actual architecture projects...

these questions may have existed somewhere here in the forums, but I would like to ask:

How does one use GH/Rhino on doing architectural proposals? how are those forms going to be exported in CAD documentation?

My apologies as I was used on working on 3ds MAX to cad of which 3dsmax is only for visualization, while GH's forms are needed to be exported.

I also plan to re-establish my skills with GH/Rhino as my primary 3d software, also I'm planning join an architecture competition using GH- so I'm curious.

Hi Constantine,

for memory and performance reasons, Grasshopper geometry is not stored inside the Rhino document. If you want to transfer geometry from Grasshopper into the Rhino document, then you need to 'bake' it. Once geometry is baked, it forgets where it came from and it will no longer update when you change the Grasshopper file.

You can select all the components that contain geometry you want to bake and use the Solution->Bake Selected menu item (or use the Insert key as a shortcut). There's also a Bake button on the Canvas toolbar that does the same. It looks like a fried egg.

Alternatively, every component which contains bakeable geometry will have a Bake item in it's own popup menu. This allows you to specify layers etc. as well, but it only works for individual components.

There is also a new component in the latest few releases called Geometry Cache. This object bakes geometry at the press of a button, and it also makes sure that geometry that was baked before with the same object is either deleted or replaced.

There exist several 3rd party component libraries that have auto-bake features build in as well and you could even write a VB/C# script that bakes from within Grasshopper.

Geometry Cache, David, how do you supply a unique name to this component?

Same way you supply a unique name to any object. Open the popup menu and type a name in the textbox that is right at the top of the menu.

I do that, and then, I go back and the name is gone!

Did you press Enter after finishing typing the name?

Since nothing serious happens when the name changes, I'll change it so it updates on every keypress.

Hi Constantine,

I've been developing 3rd party addon for Grasshopper primarily using IFC (Neutral BIM) as means of generation and exchange of Architectural (and Structural/MEP etc) attributes and relationships to other BIM software including Revit, Digital Project, ArchiCAD, Microstation, Tekla etc. You'll find some explanations and demonstrations/samples of this at my blog http://geometrygym.blogspot.com

Here's a recent video I posted. If you're not using BIM, then Rhino is very good at exchanging neutral geometry with various file options.
