Grasshopper Calculation Times

I would like to ask:

What are the chances that grasshopper has crashed and is no longer attempting to execute the script versus Grasshopper continuing to process the script and preview a solution despite the (not responding) message in the Windows title bar?

Three bad things can happen:

Grasshopper is busy calculating something that takes a long time. If you're willing to wait then eventually it will finish and you can be on your way.
Grasshopper has crashed and Rhino is shutting down. There will be all sorts of error messages and crash windows visible in this case.
Grasshopper is executing an endless loop. It will keep on consuming a lot of processing power, memory consumption will remain flat, and it will never exit from this state. It is not always possible to tell the difference between (1) and (3).
