algorithmic modeling for Rhino

GH has stopped referencing geometry in Rhino, now it defaults to creating new geometry and I can't figure out why?

What geometry? Points? Points are special because they can both be referenced and you can pick them directly. If there are points to pick, the default mode is point object, if there are no points you could possibly pick, the default mode is coordinate.

Ahhh. I think its because I was trying to select a rectangle curve in rhino as a rectangle, which I would have assumed would work? It does with Crv node, but not Rec node, which is odd, but I'm sure theres a reason.

The reason (which is not a very good one) is that rhino does not guarantee that lines, circles, arcs, rectangles and polylines remain lines, circles, arcs, rectangles and polylines. There are lots of commands that might turn thise types of curves into nurbs curves. This is why only curves can be referenced. You can plug a referenced curve into a rectangle parameter though to attempt the conversion.

Thank you very much for the response, David, much appreciated and keep up the great work!
