algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hi,
I want to translate this model into a system I can analyse through Karamba, considering the puzzle-like system for the connection as well.
As inputs for the geometry what can I do to have a model with the pieces of the shell together with the connections? I want to take into account of these connections but I don't know how in order to analyse the shell structurally.
This is a portion of the shell just to show you the typology of system.
Thanks a lot,
Marinella

Hi Marinella,
There seems to be something wrong with your images...
Best regards,
Hi Marinella,
What I mean is that when I click the images on the links these are appear clipped. I'm not sure I can help, but I'll try. Yes, either upload the rhino file or the re-upload the images.
I would suggest trying to follow a tutorial first on how to model shells in karamba, if your question is on how to do it. I would say you need to model each one of the pieces of your dome as a mesh. You can simulate multiple meshes connected with each other, which I think is what you want. I believe that karamba models the shell-to-shell interfaces as glued, which may be what you are doing or not. I added a quick example
Aren't your connections integral? Or in other words, aren't the connections part of the piece geometry? Just model each piece as a mesh, a planar face with the piece geometry. Though, one important problem you'll face is planarity issues with the connections. To correctly simulate the behaviour of your structure you would probably need to use solid meshes. You will have to check with the Karamba team (Clemens for instance) if this is possible in Karamba.
On a side note you need to look at Pedro Varela work on stereotomy. If your vault is a compression only structure you don't need the connections.
Hi,
the connections are part of the structure, my vault should work on compression but I created the connection system, not for structural purposes, but more to assemble the structure.
The pieces are planar and the connection help to connect the different orientation of the pieces as well.
This is the file just to give you an idea.
And yes, I'll check his work out.
Thanks a lot.
