Not exactly, but I'm pretty sure it's an energy minimisation loop. The algorithm creates an initial guess for the geodesic curve (either a straight line in UV space or a straight line in XYZ space and then projected onto the surface, and then it wiggles it about, measures the difference in length and amplifies the wiggle that improved the solution. Rinse and repeat.
