Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello!
I am new here. I have a project in my mind: I try to create a collection of objects by drawing only the first object, the middle one, and the last one. It is a question of generating the transitional forms with Grasshopper.

I made several tests on illustrator, but you will see that it does not work (image "recherches morphing.jpg "), the forms are not be transform symmetrically.

So I try to make this transformation on Grasshopper. I drew lines with Rhinoceros, you will find them in the file " trois lignes.3dm ".

I hope that my idea is explained well, and thank you very much for your help!

Miren

Salut Miren,

the problem with your shapes is that they have different topology. The leftmost shape consists of two curves while the middle and rightmost one only have a single outline. There's no clean way to morph between these without either breaking both curves open and reattaching them to each other or having one of them fade to nothing.

Your other problem (which is solvable) is to do with parametrization. You want to be able to control what portions on curve A blend to what portions of curve B. This basically involves you defining a set of ordered points on A, B and C that encode this parametrization.

A completely different approach is to not draw the outlines and then rely on the software to try and figure out how two different outlines are supposed to blend together, but the draw the parts that make up the shape. Parts, plural.

The image below shows how one can set up a blending between shapes A and B by treating both A and B as a conglomerate of individual shapes that are easy to blend. The total shape is then the region union of all of these sub-shapes. This way, topological changes can be dealt with relatively easily.

Thank you so much for your clear and quick answer ;) !

If you want to draw your objects with 2 curves, you could begin to draw one object with 2 curves (with enough control points) and after the other objects (with a copy of the same curves). So you can control how the transform is done (through control points).

See an example here : Letters must be replaced by your first shape.

I have no time to test it tonight with an example same as yours. I could help (in French ?)

This could be one way of doing this in GH using your boundary curve only.

How about 3D? not sectional 2D? Do you have any idea or papers on this problem? I mean 3D mesh or brep  morphing.

Look at that

And this forum is quite dead, only authors receive some emails.

Really thanks. That's what I am looking for...

Hello, I know I am in the wrong place, and this might be embarrassing to ask.. But how were you able to post a discussion question? I am trying to look for the publisher everywhere!

Thanks in advance : )
