algorithmic modeling for Rhino

hi!

i have this:

and i want to make this:

Otherwise said, i want my poles to splay and merge in smooth fashion with the freeform roof surface.

How should i go about this?

Thanks a lot!

PS: what's the english term when merging 2 volumes so that the resulted surface doesn't have creases? i'm guessing it's not "fillet merge" ...  :)

i played around with the Spacial Deformation component, but the only thing i could get was this:

i thought i'd try to make the initial canopy using Spacial Def component, so i don't get those pesky kinks, but the program froze. maybe it did not freeze, but it couldn't get a result in a decent amount of time (=a few minutes max). i initially had about 5000 points defining my surface. i narrowed them down to about 300 but still couldn't get a result.

still hoping for some input from you guys...
thanks!
You could add the heights like this:

here's the def

so THAT'S how it's done!!
thanks a lot! super valuable input!

any idea what's the best way to make only one surface of the two?
Making it into a single untrimmed NURBS surface is not possible because of the topology.

You could build up a continuous polysurface from patches (maybe using T-Splines) of just the funnels/columns joined with a flat roof first.
The technique of summing the heights with the wavy surface I showed above would then still work the same with that polysurf
how do you suggest i join the flat roof with the columns? i tries Brep Join and Solid Union, but was unsuccessful
(thanks again for your input)

Hi Daniel:

Could you please take a few minutes and explain to some degree how to do what you described to Andrei in this discussion thread.  I've mimicked your technique in that thread, but the output surface I really need is a single surface resulting from taking a base surface (your wavy one) and summing the (negative-valued) funnels/columns surface with that base surface.  Furthermore, the individual funnels might overlap near the top, and I'd like for their forms to "superimpose" in the construction of the final surface.

I'd appreciate any advice you might give.  I've been on GH for only four days, and I'm completely self taught.  Thus I know almost none of the lingo and terminology.

I can send you my current file if it will help.

Thanks,
Randy

gd work. how can i change the dimension of column ?
