Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

hey has anyone explored the process of filament winding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filament_winding).please do give in your inputs.  i have been looking around here and had come across this http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/random-line-generation-ar... .

But what i am trying to achieve is a single polyline that follows a geometry and a winding pattern.

Shall soon attach a file that i  have been working on.

regards,

kartik

Are you already familiar with Peter Donders' work ?

http://www.grasshopper3d.com/profile/PeterDonders

hello Daniel , yes i am aware of his (Peter Donders) work. I have been following some posts here on the possible methods and of what i came across is a method where a geometry is subdivided and then made random cut planes and then intersected with the main geometry and in that case it visually looks correct but when the same thing is to be modeled for a machinic process then it fails. what i mean is that , for a machining process or for manufacturing something like that robotically or also by a CNC one needs to be able to achieve a situation where all the lines following the Geodesic paths on the geometry are poly line. I hope with my description i am able to explain well enough to understand.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbMMuGSYm9A - I am looking at generating a winding path of this sort around a geometry (cylindrical and sometimes not). In my case i am 3d scanning a geometry and that geometry to be used to generate the filament winding paths.

Also i have been looking at this -->>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTXMqBae7Es

Hi Kartik,

It seems to me like Peter Donders uses manual control for making the windings (no?).

Have a look at this project as it might be something you are looking for:

http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/3d-printed-inflated-struc...

But are you just looking for creating a polyline around a scan in grasshopper, which is useable for machining, or do you want to actually make/control a machine by generating output (machine code) in grasshopper?

hey @siemen , thank you for your reply , i have referred the example you have have linked here. Its a great process. truly fascinating.  in response to your reply - it would be ideal to actually make/control a machine by generating output (machine code) in grasshopper. yes. I had done a small machining pass using Kuka for my academic project , but now i am considering to use a CNC milling machine for this process .

That would make things a lot easier indeed. I'm curious of how your project will develop. Will you post somewhere your research and results?

Laurent has done something similar winding polylines around a mesh but they are not geodesic. However, perhaps this could be modified to be geodesic? It uses a formula to add an angle to the direction of the winding so maybe there is a formula or method to keep the winding geodesic?

http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/wrapping-winding-around-mesh

You might need to do some processing on your scanned geometry mesh first to tidy up the scanned data and reduce the size of the mesh.

Thank you @Laurent for your response.  I have also been through this example. I shall try and work with your valuable inputs. hopefully keep updating.

thank you Martyn Hogg

I shall try and see your reference helps. Its been quiet some time now, and I am getting back to this project. Sadly the process shall be done digital and not physical.

Hi Katrik

I am also interested in the modeling of filament winding on Grasshopper could we exchange and work together?
