Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

hi to all digital manufactors,

does anyone have an idea how to parameterize something like this (A_1) with grasshopper?

in my case, i want to panel (triangulation or quad) a double curved srf and connect each triangle or quad with a joint element, but my example was done by hand (B_1) and i have a lot of triangles and the basic srf will be changed from time to time. so my idea is to work with grasshopper to react very fast if some parameters will be changed in the future.

Is there an example definition outthere to understand what i have to do or do you guys can help me out?(i am not really professional with grasshopper, but i try my best)

Thanks in advance and best regards, Frankie

Here's a first stab - I didn't attempt laying out or labeling, and so far I've only tested it on simple meshes with only triangles, but hopefully it gives you an idea of where to start.Mesh_fabricator.ghx
Hi Andrew,
at first thanx for your quick reply.

this is a great definition and the principles are exactly what i was looking for.
i visited your website and i think you are really professional. could it be possible to contact you if i have further questions. actually my diploma have the same topic like things you did in the past(topic=digitaltoproduction).
did you used this definition already for realizing projects with a cnc or lasercutter?
in my first casestudy, i worked on a ribbing structure and realized it last week. there i had the advantage to unroll the profiles and label them. so i will try to implement this in your definition(do you think its easy to do this? ,like i said before i am a beginner)

i will let you know if i have a solution but at first i try to understand your definition.

if you work on this definition and get new results, let me know what you did!

see you and thank you very much

Frankie
Here's a newer version. This one does layout and labeling too, and cuts slots in both the faces and the connectors, so it's easier to tell where to slide each piece in. The slots are calculated with a series of boolean operations, which is probably not the most efficient way to go about it, but it seems to work, if slowly. I apologize; the definition is kind of a mess. When I have time I will try to organize it/annotate it and see if I can't find some more efficient ways to do things. The way the labeling system works is slightly counter-intuitive: basically, each face has a number and three connectors associated with it labeled a, b, and c. You will have to refer to the 3d model to figure out which faces are adjacent to one another. The labels on the faces point outwards, and the labels on the connectors face away from the center of each edge.

Hope that's helpful/clear. Thanks to you for giving me the idea of putting together the definition in the first place!

Playing with it a little more I've come across some bugs... I will keep working on it and update as I repair things. In the meantime if you're having trouble getting things working try constructing something at a similar scale to this example mesh.

hi andrew,
keep on going. i think this definition has a lot of potential.
tomorrow i will go to the joinery to cnc my second geometrie.

i will post some pictures when its finished.
hi andrew,

here is the result

and thanks for helping me out
