extrude to a surface

Hi all,

I think I have a fairly simple question.  I am trying to create a spatial shadow by taking a plane within a building and extruding it to create a prism (see attached screen shot)... However, I want the extrusion to carry all the way to the ground surface instead of it being cut off at a seemingly arbitrary distance.
