Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Drawing things far from the origin (0,0,0) causing problems?

Hi Folks.

I am hoping someone might be able to help me with something?

I have a model where I am trying to indicate physical levels of something by drawing a pipe through grasshopper.

I am doing this by plotting the original point, plotting a new point from excel data drawing a line and forming a pipe. All pretty easy.

I have a number slider which controls which row of data out of the excel document I want to plot - so i need the system to update quite smoothly.

Thing I noticed, is if i have my 5 points:

A) All close to the origin (0,0,0) - the system runs smoothly and I have no problems.

B) All far from the origin (250000,450000,25000) the system crawls and it takes 30 seconds to find a solution.

My model is a dam, which i should have used m on but used mm as my scale. Could this be causing my problems?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately i cannot upload the model due to work privacy concerns... but i have attached an image - and can attach a video if it helps?

Regards

Yes that makes the calculations a lot harder than needed.

you can lower the tolerance or set in the options/units the units to be meters and see how it goes.

cheers

Hi Alex.

Thank you. I had not realized you could change the model scale like that :)

That solved my problems - I left the tolerance where it was and changed the model scale to m (so i guess i did change my tolerance as well - indirectly)

Still have a little bit of lag but its working OK :)

Appreciate your time.
