Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

For anyone looking at classic double layer gridshells (Mannheim, Weald and Downland etc) this set of components will be useful. There are tools to create centreline geometry (for analysis etc), lath cutting patterns, and solid geometry for modelling/visualisation.

This is relatively untested so apologies for any bugs that may exist - let me know if you find any.

Cheers

Hi Alex,

Alex, I don't know why swept elements don`t follow my surface by the normals of the surface but by the z component of the vector. I think should be my surface. Do you know how to fix it? I still a begginer with GH I tried hard already.

Thank you in advance,

Flav

Hi, thanks for all the tools! I have just started using grasshopper and found these to be really helpful. I have encountered a little problem with the connectors and clamps. I cant seem to get them to line up with the intersection of the laths as well as being unable to scale them up to suit my lath dimensions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
Daniel

Hi Daniel

Glad you're finding the tools useful. I haven't upgraded my GH to 0.9.0061 yet so I've based my comments on the JPG you attached.

With regard to lining up the clamps with the laths, it appears that you've used a rectangle with one corner at 0,0 as the input for SweptMembers, which means that your laths are not centred on the curve centreline and the clamps therefore appear offset. Use a rectangle centred on 0,0 to correct this.

To scale up the clamps, increase the Off1 and Off2 values. These are basically offsets from the curve centrelines to the centre of the 4 fixings around the clamp; for a 50mm wide lath with 10mm fixings, you'd use an offset of 30mm (half width plus half fixing diameter). ConDIm1 and ConDim2 change the degree of curvature of the clamp - just play around with these until you get a sensible shape.

Let me know if there's anything else.

definitions its not working for me, latest version stuff.

Hi, I know this thread is rather old now but I am new to grasshopper (and rhino) which I am trying to get my head around. I have designed a basic form (attached) that I am trying to apply your logic to in order to create a structural grid shell. My main problem is that I am not sure how to apply it to the surface as there is so many parameters to consider which I dont understand yet. As you can see the surface is rather simple but Im not sure where to start. Any help would be appreciated? cheers

thank you for your programs. I learned al lot from them about rhino and grasshopper. In the title you mention the gridshell mannheim. The lattice of this building where connected in the horizontal and than it was pushed up. So the grid is not projektion because the grids have all the same length. Is there someone who knows a solution how to create such a type of gridshell?

thank you very much

Dowels command it's not working

Anyone knows if this can be applied to a variety of shapes?

Alex,

Must the input surface be a lofted surface? As I am trying to use your "Gridshell tools" components, specifically the woven centrelines  component I first connect my 2 curves, and as soon as I connect my reference surface, which is a surface linked to my nurbs surface in rhino, I get an error " Solution Exception:Index was outside of the bounds of the array"

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Thomas
