well, this is not exactly hexagons but might be helpful as an approach. Not sure if this is what you are after.

In this case the egdes of a face of the dodecahedron were "lofted to point" to the center of the sphere. Then intersected with the sphere. you might want to look for another platonic solid as base geometry.
