Determining the shortest distances from a set of points to a surface/polysurface

can you elaborate

I have a set of points near a doubly curved surface.  I can project each of the points on the surface such that the lines joining the original and projected points are normal to the surface.  This lines represent the shortest distance from the point to the surface.  I need to then create a contour map on the surface to show the variation of the shortest distances.
