Deleting overlapping surfaces

Here's a method that works for a small grid (5 X 5) but becomes laboriously slow when trying a grid as large as your example (25 X 35):

Having tried several methods that were complex and slow, I'm wondering if the best method might be to create just one trimmed shape and array that in a grid instead?
