Custom / linked User Objects folder

I have a ghuser object in a repository - I would like to have this object be loaded by grasshopper automatically when the program starts.

The obvious solution - copy the .ghuser file into the User Objects folder - seems like a bad idea, I'll have two copies of the object, and will invariably edit the wrong one.

I tried creating a shortcut to my ghuser folder in the User Objects folder, and I tried creating shortcuts to the individual object. These approaches didn't work.

Is there any way to accomplish what I am trying to do?
