Creating a geometry from points that reconfigures into a line

Hello,

I'm pretty new still and I'm looking to take something as in the image below...the chain of sorts...and make it so that it stretches from this form into a straight line and retains it's total perimeter. It's a study of forms that change with heat and remember their original configuration. I'm not sure if Kangaroo is the best place to go for this--we've done a few tutorials of dangling ropes in class. 


For now I have no idea where to start in getting the points to relocate via grasshopper. Help of any kind is appreciated.

Wow! Thank you! That's very close. Is it possible to make it so that the overall geometry stretches as those hexagons scale down? Something similar to this image:
