Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi All,

Just a quick question I hope you guys can help me with, thanks in advance!

The thing is that I have a system (2,7 ghz-i7, 8 gb RAM, 512Mb ATI) that sometimes breaks down due to " out of memory" reasons when applying algorithms to work for hours to compute many iterations..

Is there any way I could rent "computing performance" or "cloud service" out of my system to boost both memory and computational speed up??

I´m running Rhino on win 7 64 bit, 128 GB RAM, have Quadro K6000 and 2 Xeon 2,5Ghz (40 Cores) and Grasshopper is still slow? Is there some settings to do it faster? Thanks...
In terms of speed, the only thing that matters is the speed of *one* of your cores. GH is not multithreaded, so the number of cores is irrelevant. The graphics card only makes a difference in terms of display. Memory access speed can also be relevant, but considering the other stats you mentioned I assume your memory is fast.

If GH is slow, that means it's probably performing a lot calculations. There's little that can be done to speed this up, though you can buffer your processes by inserting data dams and not compute *all* data *all* the time.

On the subject of memory speed - one thing to check for is whether XMP is enabled in the bios.

When I got a new machine, I found that even though the RAM was rated for 2133MHz, by default XMP was not enabled and it was only running at 1333.

I didn't run any precise tests, but it seemed to speed things up in Grasshopper after I changed this.

yes this pumps up the processor too a bit. in case of blue screen sometimes xpm resets itself so must be enabled again. (maybe depending on the motherboard)

the motherboard its Lenovo but anyway thx

Interesting, i will give it a go

Indeed, think I'll give it a whirl as well. Thanks for the tip Daniel..
