algorithmic modeling for Rhino

I am working on the translation of a raster image to a colored grid surface of squares based on the colors of the image. I have attached two files (Source and Grid) which explain the idea..

Till now I found three ways of analysing an image:

The thing I do not understand is the amount of variables it can produce?
I would like to control this because I need to control the amount of colors used on the grid.

By using these I can create a list of RGB data which corresponds to rows of pixels.

By knowing all this I am still not capable of analyzing a picture and use the RGB codes in a list to fill the squares in the grid with a specific amount of colors.

*UPDATE
I have worked on it pretty much all day and managed to generate a grid filled with rectangles corresponding to the sampled image, really nice! Besides this I also found the bake attributes script which allows me to bake the color and geometry in order to continue working on it in Rhino.

At this moment I can control the geometry, the size and amount of tiles and the size of the tiles.
I would only (understatement) need to control the amount om samples that are taken. At this moment the 'image sampler' uses the complete spectrum of colors in RGB. But I would like to use a specific amount of colors (10-15).
