center of a group

Helli,

I need to find the center or any other kind of reference point of a "group" (transform /util/group) to align them.

The group consists of closed curves.

Is it possible to retrive the plane where the group (or any kind of geometry?) is attached to?

Or is there a consistent point you can pull from the curves in each group? i.e. get an end point of a particular curve in the group, the shortest or longest curve for example.
