algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello people,

I'm undergoing some research in cellular systems for an urbanism project. More precisely you can imagine the structure I am aiming for as a sort of foam or sponge with a huge variety of cell types (volume, alignment etc).

Since everybody is so daffy about the voronoi diagram it came to my mind at the very beginning. The image shows my spacial approach quite good


Because I need them also in section I took a look into the fantastic work of Dimitrie Stefanscu to generate these kind of cells in 3D space. The output is quite useful and ready to play with


Question: Does anybody can give me reasonable doubts in using this space partitioning strategy or knoes an even better one working in three dimensions with a similar variety in geometries?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Patrick,

Rather than giving you reasons to avoid or use the voronoi diagram as a urban partitioning system, I would like to ask you, what makes it so good to be considered in your project? Seems like it is the only solution that you are considering.

I'll manage to generate differentiated volumes of greatly varying volumes and geometries. Therefore, the system should include spacial and formal differentiation in order to provide gradients of demanded qualities. Since I am lacking knowledge in pattern science and cellular systems - the voronoi diagram suited better than stacking boxes and bubbles together.

The first image on top shows quite good for what I am looking for. Besides different formal articulations the framework alows a certain amount of clustering nodes and areas of concentration/relaxion. Another good reason is the coherency between plan and section of cells - the urban system in my case is not seen as a bunch of streets and buildings. Moreover, the image of blurring boundaries/qualities and a cellular foam distribution is considered.

If you have some good geometrical advices let me know. pat
Just to add: I did some experiments of volume distribution some time ago postet here. However, it seemed to me to be a pretty 2D approach in variety and not fully satisfying.

i suggest u to look that buildings project. I cant find much more
pics but sure u can find. it has an interesting non orthogonal space
it can give u some ideas.
i m also working something like that but much more about detailing and application

we can discuss later.

thanks for the REX example. It's close to what I am aiming for but the formal variety in cell shapes is quite poor. Aditionally, the gaps in between play an important role for circulation purposes and should be solved within the cell typologies.
