yes, of course. There are definitely some potential issues, though. The key is that you'll have to orient your construction plane along the centerline. This is pretty easy when the frames you're trying to build are always plumb and non-vertical. In this case, you can create perpendicular frames along the centerline...you'd probably want to rotate their x-axis to to the world z...this way you'd always be able to define your width along the y axis and depth along the x axis of your rotated planes. When you're not trying to make your frames plumb, or if you're trying to also construct elements that are vertical, you'll have to be able to manage the axes of your construction planes. With a standard grid oriented on the world xy plane, this isn't an issue with columns (you can just re-orient an XY Plane and you're good to go).
Now that's a thing of beauty.
I would just add "RemDup" and erase duplicating vertices - sometimes the input geometry could be not as clean as box is. Anyway, this is one of the most elegant def on this forum ;)
