Layer is a Rhino concept. You can find more about it in the Rhino helpfile.

It doesn't matter which layer you choose. You can assign layer properties in Rhino to any layer you want.

You know how everyone keeps banging on about Grasshopper being a plug-in for Rhino. It's because learning Rhino is a fairly big part of knowing how Grasshopper works.

Layers are a Rhino Device that allows you to "group" geometry on them to have the same attributes like Materials or Line Thicknesses etc. You can then turn them off so they will no longer display or lock them so you can no longer edit those objects.
