Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello,

I have the latest build of Grasshopper and I'm trying to open and dissect the grasshopper file located here:

http://www.liftarchitects.com/journal/2008/10/27/waffle-structural-...

However when I open the grasshopper file nothing is showing in Rhino?  I'm new to the grasshopper scene and what my ultimate question is if you only have a grasshopper file, once you have that file open how do you have something in Rhino show up based on the Grasshopper file?

To elaborate further...

I guess what I'm not understanding is when I download and open this particular definition from Lift Architects, how do I use it to create structural systems that show up in Rhino?  My Rhino screen is blank when I open this definition in Grasshopper...

Thanks

Hi Patrick,

This definition is set up to reference a surface in Rhino. Without the companion 3DM open in rhino nothing will happen when you first open it up. Right click on the Srf Param and choose the set one Surface option from the context menu. GH should minimize and allow you to select a surface that you have created in your Rhino space. (Follow the command line instructions if you get lost)

Also this particular file was written for a much older version of GH where the data structures were completely different. I have added some Clean components (highlighted in purple) and Grafts (up arrow icons) around the definition to bring it up to date.

Note that the view above has both Draw Icons and Draw Fancy Wires options set from the GH>View menu.

Oops I didn't completely check the outcome. I've now added two flatten functions to get the notches to work correctly.

Also to elaborate on the Graft and fancy wires here is an example using the Graft Component. Notice the difference in Wire Displays now entering the Rotate Component.

Danny,

I really appreciate your help and your patience.  I created a simple corner to corner plane in Rhino and referenced the srf param to that surface, however when I manipulate the sliders no changes take place.  Is there something else I'm missing?

try it on a surface with some curvature

That's it, you have been very helpful and I really appreciate it.  Two more things... is it possible to export the generative shapes that grasshopper creates in Rhino as a .3ds or .obj?  Also, if I wanted read up on how to export grasshopper generative shapes from Rhino to cut out on a CNC machine or laser cutter could you point me in the right direction?

Thanks again

Hi,

I ran across a similar problem so I thought I would post on here... I am trying to use lift architects waffle structure definition but i am running the latest version of grasshopper. I am intrested in updating the definition.

Also I tried to download your deinition but it takes me to a site with a script. Ihave tried other definitions but i would like to use this one.

Any help would be awesome!

Thanks,

-felipe

the folks over at modeLab have posted a recent waffle definition as part of their continuing learning series.
