algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hello All,
my question is, how to create "plane patterns" similar to the picture attached in the photo. I am try to create plane patterns for a complex space frame. The method I have been using is to start with a surface and then create new surfaces from the initial surface (move point, draw line, loft), but that has obvious limitations. What is the best way to create "plane patterns"?
Thanks

Thank You MKR and Ethan, both scripts are excellent! Perfect for what I am doing which is constructing Tensegrial (spelling?) net frames along a curved center line.
Okay So my reply got deleted, but I will add it again. I created a version of the script using stuff from both of your methods, I have two issues though:
1. Everything works great when I adjust the line along the z axis (as illustrated in ethans picture), but when I twist the curve along the x axis the whole thing goes hokey. I removed all references to global xy cordinates but it still does this...
2. Is there any way to modulate the scale of the pattern as it flows along the line? I want to run the pattern along a surface, and the adjust the surface width at different points and have the pattern correspond. so as it sweeps and turns it scales smaller (total scale, size of surfaces and distance from each other), and then scales back larger. Can this be done?
Thanks!!!!
Could you please clarify what you mean by "hokey"? I see from your def that everything is now rotated 90 degrees from your initial picture - is that what bothers you? OR -I also adjusted the control points in your line so it curves in the xy plane, and the "wings" are no longer aligned. Is THAT what bothers you?
Hey Ethan, Basically I set it up the pattern just as I want it (the wings and such). When I adjust the control points on the curve only on the z axis the pattern remains intact (and flows along the curve.) Yet when I adjust the control points on the x and y axis, the pattern distorts (flips and such).
I want to adjust the control points in any manner, and have the pattern remain intact (flow along the curve accordingly, like in your picture.
Does that make sense?
Thanks!!
and yes, I rotated the wings 90 degrees on purpose.
Hi OneEye,
Try the attached. I get tripped up all the time working with local planes but it pays to pay attention to the colors of the xy axis (green and red) to see what's actually happening. I restored xy connections to the plane that controls the movement of the wings but changed them, so it now appears to flow along the curve. Let me know if it suits your purpose.
Ethan
Nice!
