Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi,

I have a question regarding the Utilization component in Karamba3D.

When "Details?" is set to true and a panel is linked to the detail output, all resistances of the elements are displayed. However, also psi_y is mentioned.

"What does psi_y represent in the details of the Utilization component?"

psi_y gives results shows positive and negative results with a value below 1. At first, I thought it was the buckling reduction factor around the y-axis, but it is not.

Please help,

Thanks in advance!

Dear Rayaan,

psi_y is a calculation value used in the course of the procedure according to EC3. It is connected to the distribution of bending moments along a beam. For details see https://www.grasshopper3d.com/group/karamba3d/forum/topics/master-o....

Clemens

Dear Clemens,

Thanks for your reply, can you be more specific about the used procedure. Is this parameter used for Lateral Torsional Buckling? On page 45 phi_y is discussed, which represents the rotation of the beam in the y-direction at its support.

Is this the same phi_y?

Regards,
Rayaan

Dear Rayaan,

the phi_y-value from EC3 has nothing to do with rotations. It is a coefficient which is connected to the uniformity of bending moments along the beam.

Best,

Clemens
