Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi all,

I'm new to karamba so this may seem like a basic question.
I need to minimize bending moment of a shell structure so I need to know the amount of it, as the attached jpg, Is it a correct component? If yes, should I minimize each mxx, myy, mxy individually? or can I  construct a vector from this values?

Thanks for in advance for any explanation and insights!

Hi Shabnam,

mxx, myy and mxy form a tensor and their actual values depend on the chosen coordinate system. This makes them not a good choice for optimizing structural performance. The principal moments m1 and m2 are independent of the reference system and therefore more suitable.

In case you want to improve the overall structural performance you could also try to minimize the bending energy of the structure. This value is returned by the 'Deformation-Energy'-component.

Best,

Clemens
