algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi guys,

I tried connecting an Ipad to my laptop during a class (through the touch OSC reader) and although it works sometimes (at home), the IP is often protected and the signal does not go through. Is there a way to do it without the IP which would work despite security?

Many thanks,

Arthur

Hey Arthur,

A lot of networks tend to block UDP messages (the OSC Sender/Listener components still use the User Datagram Protocol... it's just a specially formatted message that conforms to the Open Sound Control specifications).  Anyway, to get around this, the easiest way is to create your own ad-hoc network.  Here are some step-by-step instructions (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/set-up-a-computer-...) although it's pretty simple to setup using the Network Wizard.  Using an ad-hoc network means you wont have internet access (as your wireless card in your computer basically creates a mini-wireless network that devices can connect to within a small distance from your computer).  But, since it's localized to your computer... you know it will work 100% of the time for sending UDP messages.  I often use this technique when teaching as I don't know what network will be available in whatever place I go to... and if I rely on my own setup then I have more control.  You sometimes have to wait a min. or two in order for your computer to auto-generate the IP addresses... but in general, it should be relatively straight forward.

I hope this helps.
