Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

I've been using Pure data to convert to OSC to transmit to gHowl. I've had several crashes. When I start over I get a message in gHowl that says the OSC port number is in use, so I have to choose a new port number in both Pure data and gHowl (even if I disconnect the port in Pure data). Is there a way to "close" or "reset" a port so I don't have to change it every time?

Mark,

before diving in to deep, what is it that is crashing?  Pure Data, Rhino / GH?

Sending OSC from Pure data requires a "/" at the beginning of the data string. I was learning through trial and error and playing around with how I was listing values (separating them with spaces, with commas, semicolons, with and without the slash). If I left out the slash at the beginning it would crash Grasshopper. It was really just user error on my part.

That being said, only if I crashed would I need to choose a new port. When I close and reopen the programs successfully I don't need to choose a new port.

ok, so everything is sorted then?  Please let me know how you get on with this MIDI adventure...I am on the hunt for some MIDI thing (or maybe a virtual instrument) that would allow me to work it into gHowl...

So I finally got everything worked out. Check this link to my process, screen shots, and files at the end of the thread. Thanks for all the help and great work on gHowl.
